The six story "Touchdown Jesus" (as it is known to us locals) was struck by lightening and burned to the ground.
Although it was built in 2004 it seems like it had been there forever waving at us as we cruised up I-75.
The church says they they are going to rebuild. This makes me and mommy so ticked off. Why? Read on:
Taken from wcpo.com "Darlene Bishop, wife of Solid Rock Church Pastor and Founder Lawrence Bishop, said she was grateful that none of the firefighters was hurt.
“We don’t grieve over fiberglass,” Bishop added. Instead, she asked others to remember flooding victims in Arkansas and Oklahoma or the people of the Gulf Coast affected by the ongoing oil spill."
She then goes on to say that the church plans to rebuild the Jesus statue to the tune of another quarter of a million dollars... "The first Jesus was resurrected in three days. It's going to take us a little longer than three days but he will be back. He's like the Terminator. He's coming back," said Pastor Bishop"
So, if we understand this correctly, they are aware of the suffering and distress going on, and still choose to waste a quarter of a million dollars on that stupid thing.
We have to ask "What Would Jesus Do?"
What Does It Mean Wednesday

How many animals would that money spay & neuter? How many people would that money feed and clothe and house? C'mon, what would Jesus do? Not build a huge styrofoam statue, that's for sure.
Woo don't even want my mom and I to get started pawing THAT one!
I wondered it the wrath of God Struck down the statue!
Sorry we hasn't been bisiting somefing happens to Blogger and we loses your linkie.
Maybe they need to pray for a better understanding of priority and charity!
And they told me that if I spent a $100 on a statue of me it was a waste of money... UH HUH...
It makes the mind boggle
People are just SO dumb! We agree, she's all remorseful about the oil spill and flood victims, but let's take a quarter million dollars and build a statue that the birds can poop on! Makes total sense!
Hmmm. Peoples are SO strange. Build a statue and forget about all the needy things that are around these days. Like peoples food and medicine and housing and natural dissaster help.
Isn't there something written down in holy books about Idols??? Them not being a good thing???
Want to come over and visit me Thursday and Friday? I will be in our upstairs lounge with mama, and there is room for both of us in my PTU. We can snuggle and get mama to feed us dentabites.
Sorry, we don't get the connection between Jesus and a huge statue which we too believe falls under the category of idol. And perhaps pride -- for having the largest statue .. uh, idol in the area. We agree that there are better ways than a statue to give folks hope.
We're thinkin' maybe Jesus was the one who sent the lightening to knock it down as He to agreed it was a waste of money.
Like we read somewhere, Jesus was struck down by an Act of God.
All this reminds us of what the noted philosopher Frank Sinatra said: "Basically, I'm for anything that gets you through the night - be it prayer, tranquilizers or a bottle of Jack Daniels."
It's like the terminator? That sounds soooooooo professional!
